Park Preview
The Formula TR Pro Series ventures east of California for the first time this season, as Miller Motorsports Park in Utah hosts Rounds Seven and Eight of the ultra-competitive open-wheel developmental series this weekend, May 20-21.
Following double-header events at the California Speedway, Buttonwillow Raceway and Willow Springs, all of which were won by Odyssey Motorsport’s Carl Skerlong, this weekend’s track battles will be held on the stunning new 4.486-mile road course at Miller Motorsports Park, just 30-minutes drive from Salt Lake City, Utah.
Setting new standards for a North American racing facility, the full course layout, which includes no fewer than 24 turns, will guarantee the Formula TR 2000 Series puts ‘pedal to the metal’ with a 3500-foot main straight leading to a daunting sequence of turns that make up part of the East Course configuration.
The question being asked heading into Rounds Seven and Eight in the 1600 class, is who can stop series leader Parker Kligerman from running away with the title?
To-date the Paladin Motorsports racer has romped to five victories from six starts, including four straight points sweeps to launch his championship bid. Only once this season has the 15-year-old been deposed from his perch on the top step of the podium, Alexander Rossi claiming the credit for that back in Round Four at Buttonwillow. Rossi came close last time out in Round Five, but ultimately Kligerman proved too strong as he kicked off another double-winning weekend at Willow Springs two weeks ago.
Heading to Miller Motorsports Park this weekend Kligerman’s eager to extend his substantial points margin, currently set at 206-139 over Paladin Motorsports teammate Liam Kenney. Willow Springs marked the first time this season Kenney’s failed to reach the podium over the course of a race weekend and he’ll be keen to make amends for that on the 4.486-mile Utah circuit.
Bill Goshen, with a pair of runner-up finishes at Willow Springs, sits just behind Kenney in the points chase, seven points the difference between the two challengers. Goshen boosted his tally with the two extra bonus points on offer for fastest lap of the race in Round Six. Tayler Malsam, driver of the No. 19 Odyssey Motorsports car, occupies fourth in the standings, his consistency netting four straight fifth place finishes from a total of five top-fives in six starts. CT Motorsports’ Kerstin Smutny completes the top-five in the points leading into this weekend’s double-header. With a podium finish under her belt from the second round in Fontana, the 16-year-old racer continues to make progress behind the wheel.
The action at Miller Motorsports Park kicks off with Round Seven on Saturday, 20th May, followed on Sunday by Round Eight, both races are 30-minute sprints to the checkered.
