Kligerman clinches the Championship
in Record Time and Record Wins
News – From www.formulatr.com –
September 17, 2006:Kligerman
wrapped up his second straight victory and clinched the FR1600
championship.
Sunday’s race saw Parker Kligerman wrap up his second straight victory and his first shut-out of the top step of the podium since Rounds 11 and 12 in Fontana back in July. In doing so Kligerman clinched the Formula TR Pro 1600 Class Championship – an impressive season-long performance rewarding the rookie with title-honors ahead of the season finale in Las Vegas next month.
It was Kligerman’s team-mate, Liam Kenney, who claimed the early glory on Sunday, capturing pole position for the 12-lap race by a tenth of a second from the champion-elect. Buoyed by his qualifying performance, and the addition of Network Solutions as a new sponsor, Kenney enjoyed some lead laps on Sunday afternoon before a costly 360-degree spin effectively handed the win to Kligerman.
While Parker romped to his eleventh win, and subsequently the title, Kenney recovered to fight back up to second ahead of Billy Goshen in third – Goshen successfully maintaining his second place in the points standings heading to Las Vegas for the final two rounds.
Round 18 Results: 1st Kligerman, 2nd Kenney, 3rd Goshen, 4th Martinez Jr., 5th Grisdale, 6th Lynch, 7th Smutny, 8th Malsam
1st – Parker Kligerman: “I’m really ecstatic to win my first championship and to do it with back-to-back wins was really just the icing on the cake. We had some problems in qualifying and lost out to Liam for the pole. I got by when he went off in the race and pulled away from everyone else to take the win and the title!”
2nd – Liam Kenney: “It was great to qualify on pole for the second time in my career! I was very happy with that and for my new sponsor Network Solutions. I opened up a pretty big lead before I got it sideways in the dirt at one point letting Parker get by. I fought back from fourth to get second at the end, setting fastest lap which was pretty pleasing!”
3rd – Billy Goshen: “I didn’t get a great start from third! I ran fourth for most of the race, got up to third at one point, dropped back but with two to go got third again and held it to the end! A win would have been good this weekend but I’ll take the podiums.”
The Formula TR 1600 Championship now heads to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for Rounds 19 and 20, the season finale, 14th-15th October 2006.
