September 20, 2006:Racing at Buttonwillow Raceway Park in Southern California,
the 2006 Formula TR Pro Series titles were determined. Sweeping the doubleheader
event, Carl Skerlong captured the 2000 class title, while Parker Kligerman
clinched the 1600 class title.
Kligerman, aware that two good results would garner the championship title, wasted no time stamping his authority on the 1600 Class at Buttonwillow. Setting a blistering lap to capture the pole position, the rookie driver led the field to the green on Saturday. Getting a good start, the youngster quickly built a gap on the trio battling for the final two podium positions. Billy Goshen, Liam Kenney and Luis Martinez Jr. duked it out lap after lap, providing the fans with some good entertainment. Kligerman leading every lap, crossed the start/finish 10 seconds ahead of Goshen to score the win. Battling all the way to the flag, Kenney narrowly edged Martinez Jr. for the final podium position. Coming home fifth was Tayler Malsam.
Adding some early excitement to the 1600 race on Sunday, Kenney led the field into turn one. Holding the top spot for several laps, Kenney's chance at a win evaporated when spun 360 degrees on track. While able to continue, Kenney relinquished the lead to Kligerman, who never looked back. Taking home his second victory of the weekend, Kligerman clinched the 1600 title ahead of the final two races (and having missed a double points race in August). Kenney recovered from his mistake to finish runner-up, while Goshen joined the duo on the podium. Martinez Jr. and Cam Grisdale completed the top-five in Round 18.
The Formula TR Pro Series season concludes, October 15, with
Rounds 19 and 20 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
